2 April fixed for Carlyle to deliver his inaugural rectorial address at Edinburgh University. Thanks Laing for his offer of hospitality but declines in favour of the Erskines. Lord Lothian not at Newbattle. Carlyle's wife will not accompany him. Address not yet written so Carlyle intends to speak extempore. Carlyle reading Laing's edition of Dunbar's poems.
